GREENE — Pfc. Walter Wunsch was proud of his military service, but his family never knew much about it.
The family knew he was a medic near France and Germany in World War II, was wounded stepping on a mine and had received a Purple Heart award.
Wunsch was born in Dumont, grew up and graduated high school from Bristow in 1943 and lived his post-discharge life in Greene with his wife, Ruth, and five children. He died in 2002.
Last July, his children found an online report saying he had won the Silver Star.
