A lifetime of dedicated community service paid off in a big way for Butler County’s War-ren Van Dyke.
Van Dyke, a local volunteer from Greene, served as Iowan of the Day on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Iowa State Fair. The award honors individuals who personify the greatness of Iowa with integrity, dependability, a strong work ethic, loyalty to helping others and an exceptional sense of community pride.
Since 1997, the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products have come together to recognize more than 220 outstand-ing Iowans. Each year they look for 10 Iowans from all across the state that goes above and beyond to make their communities a picture-perfect place to live. Van Dyke is Butler County’s third Iowan of the Day recipient in the award’s 22-year history. He joins a long list of past winners including Allison’s Wilbur Cordes in 2014 and Clarksville's Nancy Jensen in 2001.
Unknown to Van Dyke, his family, wife Lollie, and four others, prepared letters of recommendation and sent the request for his nomination to the Blue Ribbon Foundation earlier this year. It was only a few days before he got the phone call announcing that he had won, that Lollie told him about it.
