Unintended audio: Cameras shut off temporarily at City Hall

City Council and staff visited Monday, April 18 with City Attorney Carter Stevens about video recorders recently purchased for City Hall.
On March 7, City Council heard that though several cameras were to be purchased, only one camera would have a microphone, to record council meetings. Council approved the purchase.
City Clerk Larry Betts then learned the cameras inside City Hall all have microphones to record audio. The vendor that sold the cameras had apparently not realized this.
“Until the system was installed, we didn’t realize audio could be recorded in all of those different rooms,” said Jeff Kolb, a councilman, in an interview.
“We don’t want audio on a day-to-day basis because of privacy laws,” Betts said.
The city has found a temporary solution while working toward a more permanent one.
"We have the cameras, but they’re off, totally off,” Betts said.
Despite decals posted at City Hall saying patrons are being recorded, all the cameras will remain off until a policy is in place, Betts said.
