Speculation was that a time capsule was hidden behind the cornerstone when the old city hall was built, and sure enough, when the cornerstone was removed in preparation for demolition, a small time capsule, a vintage Lorillards Climax Cream of the Burley Crop plug tobacco tin was found.
Inside the tin were lists of names from the selective draft published as Extra to the Clarksville Star on August 9, 1917 and three copies of the Clarksville Star, dated May 10, 1917, July 26, 1917 and August 4, 1917.
Clarksville historian Dave Clark expressed disappointment that no one had found anything more interesting to add to the capsule—even perhaps some coins from the time period. But he was happy to report the papers are in better condition than even the ones preserved at the library.
The Clarksville Star is happy to note that it was apparently considered the most interesting thing in town at the time.
