“There are no unwounded soldiers,” Clarksville social studies teacher Chris Arians told students who gathered for the Veterans Day program Friday, Nov. 11.
“They’ve sacrificed so you can … get a free public education,” Arians said, noting citizens who benefit from freedoms in the U.S. have a duty to look out for veterans, who defended those freedoms.
Arians shared the story of a man in Vietnam fatigues seen sleeping on a bench on a recent school trip to Washington, D.C.
By the numbers:
• 150,000 veterans are living on the streets or in shelters, or 107 times the population of Clarksville. (This is the number receiving health care from VA’s specialized homelessness programs each year, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans states.)
