Shell Rock woman back in the saddle after being thrown; advocates helmet use

  SHELL ROCK — Kristi Demuth rode horses all her life.
  “We wore cowboys hats, never wore helmets when I was a kid,” she said.
  But when Demuth trained her own children to ride horses — starting 10 years ago when they moved to an acreage near Shell Rock — she trained Sara, then age 8, and Nikolas, 12, to wear helmets.
  To set a good example, she started to wear one, too.
  “I get it, it’s not very comfortable to wear a helmet. It’s hot,” said Demuth. “But I truly believe that’s what saved my life.”
