Teaching karate, for Loreli Dilly and Vicky Green, has never been about making money. It’s all about saving one person, somewhere, from a bad situation.
That’s why black belts Green and Dilly opened the non-profit Shell Rock Karate Club in 1991 and still meet with students every week to instruct in the Tang Soo Do style of karate—the way of Chinese hand.
The club meets Thursdays from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the Boyd Building, and everyone is welcome. Most nights there are six black belts and generally 10 to 20 students—although in the past, numbers have been as high as 65.
Students range from as young as seven to senior citizens. Beginners start the first month for free, and then pay a small fee to help cover rent and equipment.
