Savvy Seniors: Meet Doris Haan of Shell Rock

Doris (Hook) Haan, 85, resides at Shell Rock Healthcare Center.
     She grew up on a farm near Aplington. On the farm, the Hook family raised cows and hogs. They milked by hand and grew corn, soybeans and oats. Haan remembered her dad and brothers farming with horses.
     “I liked [the horses]. They were gentle, and I even got to lead them,” Haan said.
     Corn harvest would take over a month every year as the family harvested their 80-acres by hand.
