Savvy Seniors: A helping hand

“Helping people—that’s what got me through life,” said Bernice Kappmeyer.
     Kappmeyer, 92, resides at the Shell Rock Health Care Center. Her best memories are of making life just a little bit easier for others.
     She grew up on a farm in Douglas township near Frederika. Every day she walked 1.75 miles to school. On the way, she would pass the local UCC church her father was president of and the cemetery where she hopes to someday be buried.
     Growing up as a country kid was a lot of fun. They worked hard and played hard.
     “We had cattle, hogs and chickens, cornfields, oats and beans,” Kappmeyer said.
