Savvy Seniors: Farming, travel and faith

Mary Hennings, 80, resides at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
     She was born on a farm near Fredericksburg where her family raised a hodgepodge of animals: pigs, cows, chickens and geese—including one old gander who would always chase her.
     When she was five years old, her family moved to a farm near Sumner. Here they also had all kinds of animals, crops and a large garden. Hennings learned to milk cows by hand when she was eight or nine years old.
     Her siblings were all quite a bit older than she, and there weren’t many close neighbors. So she often played alone. She liked to climb trees and would play cowboys.
