American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Butler County volunteers received awards on October 13 during a Relay For Life conference for the eastern half of Iowa in Waverly.
Marj Johnson and Kathleen Petersen accepted a top fundraising team award on behalf of Relay for Life team, The Barnett Bunch. The Barnett Bunch team has been relaying since 2009 in Butler County. Their team banner says Friends and Family of Pa and Ma Barnett, and when you see the sea of yellow shirts at Relay For Life of Butler County, you know the team of 30-40 (depending on the year) is truly there for each other. These team members use their talents of baking, crafting, and selling to raise funds year-round, along with matching funds, and this year was no different, raising over $13,000 for the fight against cancer!
This year, an estimated 1.3 million people in the U.S. participated in more than 2,000 events to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness. Funds raised support the American Cancer Society 24/7 cancer help line, patient services, and cancer research. By joining the Relay For Life event, you can help attack cancer from every angle.
While great progress has been made in the fight against cancer, there is still much more to be done, which is why Butler County is joining together for the 2019 American Cancer Society Relay For Life. The event will take place on July 12 at the Butler County Fairgrounds. For more information, visit www.relayforlife.org/butlercountyia.
