The ladies of American Legion Auxiliary Post 360 in Dumont are on a mission to bring those who have served peace and comfort through patriotically themed quilts of valor.
“They sacrificed so much for us. Our veterans sacrificed so much and gave up so much,” said Auxiliary member Deb Stock. “It’s just a small, small thing we can do for them. It’s an appreciation thing to let them know they’re thought about and not forgotten.”
The 37 members of the Auxiliary have been working through the list of Dumont American Legion members since 2015. They started by giving quilts to World War II Veterans. Since then, they have given quilts to Korea veterans, and now are sending quilts to Vietnam veterans. So far, they’ve given 19 quilts, some to members of the Legion post who live as far away as Oregon and Connecticut.
“The quilt is to honor the service person, and to help the combat warrior find peace and comfort wrapped in it,” said member Fern Griner. “I just feel we need to do something for our servicemen, and that’s some little thing to do.”
