Fourth graders and teachers from North Butler, Clarksville and Aplington-Parkersburg schools and a homeschool group attended the annual Progressive Agricultural Safety Day hosted by Butler County ISU Extension and Outreach on May 2 at the Butler County Fairgrounds.
For many children, the farm is a home, a playground and a place where they do chores.  For others, it is a nice place to visit and play with their farm cousins or friends.  Teaching youth how to take some of the responsibility for their own safety on the farm, or even at their own homes, was the subject of the 2019 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.  Hands-on experiences led by local community members taught Safety Day participants lifelong farm and home safety lessons.
The 130 students in attendance visited 11 stations and learned about animal, grain, firearm, ATV, fire, sun, tractor, water, bike, electrical, chemical and railroad safety.
In grain safety, students learned about dangerous air pockets when grain carts are unloaded and used a simulator to practice the technique for rescuing a person who has fallen into a grain bin. At the firearm safety program, Sheriff Jason Johnson, Chief Deputy Mike Lammers and Deputy Steve Martin, spoke with kids about what to do if they find a gun–don’t touch it, and tell an adult. In other sessions, students learned about first aid, the importance of applying sunscreen, the need for wearing protective clothing when mowing the lawn, and much more.
