In between reviewing financial reports and approving early graduation requests for seven students, members of the North Butler CSD Board of Education enjoyed a special holiday treat at their monthly meeting on December 10. High school students from the foods class presented a variety of dishes created under the supervision of family and consumer sciences teacher Mary Hanson, including pinwheels, a sweet and savory pineapple cheese ball, and a bacon cream cheese wreath.

Students collaborate with the lunchroom staff to assist in food prep, which provides an opportunity to develop their knife skills as they cut watermelon, kiwi, and other fresh produce.      The students also take turns working individually in the lunch room with Marshall to gain hands-on employment experience.
"I have a checklist where I look to see if they are on time, understand the basics, and work well with our other staff," Marshall said. "I check their social media accounts, just like many prospective employers do. At the end, I ask 'Would I hire them?'"
