Many Iowans have taken refuge in their homes and offices in the aftermath of the latest hiemal blasts, which set a new record for February, averaging 22.5 inches of an algid, white, powdery substance over the once green and flourishing fields of this state. An intrepid 445 residents of Butler County, however, can still be seen outdoors, impervious to the redoubtable gales, ostensibly having developed some type of immunity to the mysterious white substance. They call themselves snowmobilers.
“We don’t like dealing with the cold and snow, but we make the best of it and have fun with it. It’s here,” said Butler County Snow Snoops President Seth Bram of Packard.
Of the 445 registered snowmobile owners in Butler County, 70 belong to the Snow Snoops club. Many more benefit from their efforts.
The club works around the clock grooming roughly 180 miles of trail throughout Butler County, reaching Allison, Aplington, Aredale, Clarksville, Dumont, Greene, New Hartford, Parkersburg and Shell Rock, and 15 miles of trail in Floyd County, leading up to Nashua. The trail system also connects with trails leading to Plainfield, Waverly, Rockford, Rockwell, Floyd and Charles City.
