Sharing the love of Christ is a passion for Kortney Sherburne of Aplington, Jason Edeker of Greene, and his girlfriend Karly Nederhoff, who were among a group of 20-25 who travelled with Emmanuel Covenant Church to spend a week (July 13-19) working at the Emmanuel Kingdom Ministries Children’s Home in Juarez, Mexico.
“God put us on this earth to take care of our neighbors,” Edeker said. The Children’s Home is a place where kids from ages four to 16 years old, often from single-parent homes, stay from Sunday afternoon to Friday night, while parents work. Parents often work two shifts per day, and still only make $60 per week. On Friday night, the parents pick the children up and take them home for the weekend.
This was Sherburne’s second mission trip to Mexico. A veterinary student at Iowa State, Sherburne has also taken two mission trips to Nicaragua. She decided to return to Mexico this year to see the child she sponsors at the home and spend time with the children. For Edeker, who works at Wells Hollow Landscaping, this was also his second trip to Mexico.
“I just felt the need to go back and do more there,” Edeker said, “and being Karly had never been on a mission trip, it was a great thing for us to share together.”
