Keeping a landmark in Allison: The fight to save Amvet Post 88

Ever since Allison’s AmVet Post 88 was built by World War II veterans in 1948, the building has served as a community center, hosting graduations, fish fries, steak fries, wedding receptions, anniversary parties, charity fundraisers and more.
     But with veterans growing older and fewer, AmVet Post 88 was slated to close this March due to lack of funding.
     “Just to keep the doors open as far as water, insurance and Mid-American, those three are $480 a month,” said Ryan Henrichs of the Wilder Days Committee.
     Henrichs, whose grandfather helped build the Post, started a fundraiser on Facebook this month to keep the landmark open, and to date has raised $3,136, enough to keep the building open for an additional six months. The AmVets met last Monday to work toward a sustainable plan to keep the building open. Their plan is to offer social memberships to anyone interested in supporting the Post.
