Iowa Northern Railroad to consolidate: Railroad is key factor in county economy

If you drive through Greene, you may notice a for sale sign in front of the Iowa Northern Railroad’s General Office. The railroad, which is one of the biggest players in the Butler County economy, is planning to consolidate its offices in Waterloo.
     While many may be initially saddened to see the general office leaving Greene, the consolidation isn’t anticipated to have a negative impact on the county’s economy. In fact, with the corporate office moving closer—from Cedar Rapids to Waterloo—the consolidation may prove to be a boon in the long term.
     Plans for the consolidation, which were initiated this summer, are still in the works, with a location for the company in Waterloo yet to be selected.
     Joshua Sabin, Director of Administration at Iowa Northern Railroad, said the Greene office will move sometime after the first of the year, with the corporate office eventually following—hopefully later in 2018.
