“He’s the bomb dot com,” 8th grader Jacob Wordes said of Ralph Longus’ teaching style. “He makes class fun. It’s wonderful.”
Industrial Tech class at Clarksville under Ralph Longus is making a difference, not only for Clarksville students, but also for children and their families at Iowa City Children’s Hospitals and Clinics. Tuesday, March 21, Longus, along with Industrial Tech students and Principal Bob Saathoff, delivered memory boxes made in class to the hospital.
The memory box project started last year, when Longus contacted the hospital to ask if they needed anything the class could make, perhaps toys or shelves. The hospital distributes the boxes to children in rehab, who use them for crafts, paint them or fill them with memorabilia. The larger boxes go to families to fill with memories when a child passes.
“My hope is that students see they are part of a bigger community, and that their donation of time can help others,” Longus said. “Even our small community can have an impact on people we will never meet.”
