How Clarksville changed a life: A foreign exchange student remembers

In 1980, Sylvia Mufarrege was an Argentinean teenager who loved big cities, particularly her hometown of Buenos Aires. A year in Clarksville as a foreign exchange student changed her perspective—and her life.
     This week, she returned to Clarksville for the first time in 37 years to surprise her foreign exchange mom, Sandra (Edeker) Lebeck.
     “It’s a dream come true,” Mufarrege said.                “So far this is the first morning downtown. I’ve been to the bank where mom used to work, and walked down Main Street to the supermarket to buy Clarksville t-shirts for my nephews in Argentina. Now we’re going to the high school to see if it’s open and remember old times.”
     Lorna Schwartz’ photography class was a highlight of high school for Mufarrege. She remembered developing photos with Schwartz, and said the experience inspired her to become a photographer.
