Yu-Ting “Tina” Su traveled to Allison last Wednesday, Aug. 10 to perform on French horn with the Sugar Daddys Big Band and answered questions about learning music after the concert. Su, a University of Northern Iowa associate professor of horn, holds a Master of Music Performance from the Julliard School in New York, and her Doctor of Music Arts from State University of New York at Stony Brook.
She earned her Bachelor of Performance from Eastman School of Music, earning a Performer Certificate. As with many success stories, she started small — literally.
Su started playing French horn — or horn — at age 8, when most people in her native Taiwan start on a musical instrument. She was admitted to the talented class for music, in which every student has to play piano and another instrument. Fortunately, she had started playing the piano already — at age 4.
