“This is one of the nicest courses around,” was a remark I heard from a family member after the first annual Greene 5K Run/Walk on June 17.
That’s a real compliment. I come from a family of runners, and it’s an unusual weekend if someone in my family is not running a 5K, 10K or half marathon. My sister Sarah Faith ran 16 miles to celebrate her 16th birthday earlier this month, and right now she’s training for a triathlon. While I only run occasional 5Ks, they leave me in the dust.
We arrived early on Saturday morning to pick up our race numbers and t-shirts. I registered on site. Then we took a look at the race map and drove through the course to familiarize ourselves with it. It looked like there would be a lot of running up-hill, which is always a challenge. You never realize how hilly some towns are until you run a 5K through the streets.
We returned a half hour before the scheduled start time to warm up: jog and stretch. Soon it was time to start. The first group of runners (including Sarah Faith) took off like lightning, leaving me at the head of a second group of runners, who soon began passing me.
