Some 750 people viewed educational displays on modern farming and listened to family farmers tell their stories as MBS Family Farms of rural Plainfield hosted an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 7 for its 40th anniversary. The Butler County Dairy Promoters offered malts; the Chickasaw County Pork Producers offered grilled pork; and Tangled Root Cafe in Nashua catered supper.
Stan and Karmen Mehmen, their son Kyle and his wife Kerri Mehmen, who live in the area, discussed the family business, answering questions from host Jim Rathis. Staff discussed why they enjoy working there.
Stan’s dad bought the farm in 1954 and paid $36,000 for it. A neighbor was afraid he would go broke paying that much for a farm.
“He made it,” Stan Mehmen said. “The buildings were kind of a disaster. I think there was only about 70 or 80 acres tillable out of 160 at that time. He cleaned it all off with a (couple of) Farmalls and a loader bucket and put a little tile and put a lot of work in it.
