On February 24, 1949, Eugene was united in marriage to Deloris Krull in Dumont, Iowa.  They farmed by Kesley for two years and Allison for five years before buying the farm near Shell Rock, where they farmed for 45 years retiring to Allison in 1999.

Eugene was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Allison, where he served as a deacon and usher.  He also went on a mission trip.  Eugene served on the board of Butler County Farm Bureau and Extension Council.

Eugene loved fishing and making things from old boards.  He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the elevator and later in his home, when the elevator closed.  Some of Eugene‘s best memories were spent around his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and anyone who was blessed enough to have learned to fish from him.
