After nearly 40 years of service to Butler County, Civil Deputy Sheriff Denise Junker retired on March 31.
She began as a Butler County dispatcher on Oct. 31, 1977. The story starts when her mother, Alma Kampman saw an ad for a dispatcher in the newspaper. Denise, age 18, wasn’t sure she was qualified, so Alma held her hand and said, “Let’s go apply,” and they did.
To set the scene, Marvin Barth Sr. was county sheriff. Dispatchers used a small, console radio and answered only for the county.
“If you wanted an ambulance or to run a license plate, (you) always had to go through Cedar Falls State (Patrol headquarters),” she said.
