Courthouse spotlight - The Assessor’s Office

     Walk into the Butler County Courthouse, and to your right, you’ll see the office of Butler County Assessor Michele Shultz. The duty of the Assessor’s office is to establish fair and equitable valuation by assessing all real property in the county.
     The assessor is concerned with value, not taxes. Taxing entities, such as cities and school districts, determine their budgets based on the valuation provided by the assessor’s office, and they establish levies. The assessor’s office does not calculate or establish tax rates or collect taxes.
     “Our job is to discover, list and value property,” Assessor Michele Shultz said. “We go out into the field, measure all buildings, and give an assessment based on square footage and other amenities of your home or the commercial or industrial property. We also track sale values of industrial, commercial and residential properties based on market value.”
