Stephen and Nellie Kaus have worked for other farmers for the past four years. Recently married, they decided to move to Shell Rock, Stephen Kaus’ hometown, and start Whistling Thistle Farm.
At the farm, they plan to grow almost every type of vegetable imaginable— tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer squash, pumpkins, broccoli, carrots, watermelon, and cantaloupe, to name a few—as well as culinary herbs. In their greenhouse, they already have herbs and onions growing, ready for spring. They anticipate their first crops, lettuce and a few herbs, will be ready by early May.
With Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), locals can buy shares in the farm and receive a weekly share of the vegetables produced. Instead of CSA farmers selling their vegetables to restaurants or grocery stores, their products are supplied directly to the community.
