Last year’s sale may have been like Black Friday, but this year’s sale was busier than ever, with the whole town of Clarksville abuzz for the annual Fall Craft Expo.
An estimated 3500 to 4000 shoppers were present, nearly double last year’s estimate of 2200 to 2500. Just about every county in Iowa from Interstate 35 east and from Highway 30 north was represented, and many shoppers drove down from Minnesota. The show, in its 15th year, is sponsored by the Clarksville Commercial Club.
“The biggest change was the increase in the crowd. The first two hours in the morning were literally elbow to elbow,” organizer Jeff Kolb said. “One thing I noticed different this year was the last couple years the heaviest crowd is from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It starts in the east gym, and the wave moves through the lunchroom to the west gym. [This year] by 10 a.m. all three rooms were elbow to elbow. The sidewalk outside was at a standstill for a while in front of the lunchroom.”
In a perfect world, he’d like to see the crowd staggered more throughout the day, but it’s only natural that people want to be there first to find the best deals.
