Maddie Poppe was among six contestants voted into the top 10 by American Idol viewers. The panel of judges chose the remaining four contestants.
Poppe chose to perform the Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian” in celebration on Monday night.
But the performance that captured the hearts of Americans and won Poppe’s place in the top 10 was “Homeward Bound” by Simon and Garfunkel Sunday evening.
While Maddie sang of “home where my thought’s escaping, home where my music’s playing, home where my love lies waiting silently for me,” everyone at home in Clarksville was falling a little more in love with Maddie Poppe.
“Maddie has become a perfect ambassador for Clarksville…” said Mayor Val Swinton. We are very proud to call her one of our own.”
The judges gave Poppe a standing ovation and embraced in a group hug.
Meanwhile in Clarksville, Mayor Swinton has been receiving Facebook messages from people wondering if a street could be named after Poppe, or if there can be a citywide Maddie Poppe day to recognize the young singer’s achievements.
“Her journey with American Idol has given our community, regardless of age, something we can all rally around,” said Councilman Jeff Kolb.
