October originally became known as Pork Month as it was the time of year pork was traditionally marketed. This month, the Butler County Pork Promoters are holding their annual pork certificates giveaway, and it’s a great time of year to brush up on pork recipes in preparation for the holidays.
Butler County Pork Promoters focus on donating to local food pantries and providing scholarships for students interested in pursuing agriculture.
Last year they gave close to $7000 in pork products to the seven food banks in Butler County. At Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, they donate hams, and throughout the year, they donate ground pork.
“We like being able to help out food banks,” Treasurer Diane Johnson said. “A lot of people now utilize the food bank. I’m glad we’re able to help them.”
