Tucked in a wooded area in the northwest quadrant of Butler County is a more than 30-acre campground: Northeast Iowa Christian Service Camp. It came into existence in 1963 with the first camp season coming the next summer in 1964. Location is one mile west of Bristow on County Road C-33; or four miles northeast of Dumont.
While the camp is under the umbrella of area Christian and Churches of Christ, campers come to day-long or week-long camps during the summer months of June through August, from nearly 50 church backgrounds or no church affiliation in a 100-mile radius. Serving for nearly two years, Director Craig Harris said the campgrounds has nine buildings of varying sizes.
“Currently we have Biblically-based summer camp and a few 2 – 3 day retreats,” Harris said. “We have begun a capital campaign to replace the current boys’ dorm with a year-round facility which could house campers. It would have both heating and air-conditioning with center banks of restroom facilities capable of dividing the sleeping space into two dorms.”
