The Iowa DOT held a public information meeting in Dumont on September 6 to discuss a proposed bridge replacement on Iowa Highway 3 in Butler County, just east of Dumont.
According to Field Services Coordinator Pete Hjelmstad, work is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020 and should be completed by late October.
“The new bridge will be about 4.5 feet higher to accommodate a 50-year flood. Right now, the bridge is rated for a 15-year flood. This will raise the gauge by 4.5 feet and keep water from going over the road …” Hjelmstad said. “Every bridge is inspected every two years. This bridge needed widened to accommodate current design standards.”
The bridge was built in 1927 and was reconstructed in 1984 using the original abutments.
