Bret Harold Morgan, 74

Bret Harold Morgan, 74, of Dumont, IA passed away on Wednesday (October 4, 2023), surrounded by loved ones, on the family farm north of Dumont.

A public visitation was held on Saturday, October 7 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the American Legion in Dumont. A small family service was held at Bret’s favorite place throughout his lifetime…on their 4th generation Century Farm, which he and Janet purchased and made their
own beginning in 1992.

Bret was born on January 25, 1949, the son of Berton LeRoy Morgan and Betty Lois (Anderson) Morgan. In his early years, Bret attended the Hansell school; and later when the family moved he was enrolled in the Dumont Community School, where he graduated in 1967. Following graduation, Bret attended NIACC in Mason City from 1967-69, and completed his AA Degree in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration.

Bret was united in marriage to Janet Faye Harris on February 6, 1970 in Latimer and was baptized shortly thereafter at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hampton, in October of 1971.

During their married years, Bret took on a number of different occupations around the state; Air Conditioning Inc. (Marshalltown), Northrup King Seeds (Washington), owner of the Country
Comfort bar and grill (Plainfield) and most recently, Nestle Beverage (Waverly) until his retirement in 2011.

Bret had a lifelong interest in guns and cars, in fact, to this day it’s not uncommon to hear friends from then and now tell stories of things he could do with a pistol or a 3-speed that would
leave you impressed...and him maybe in a little bit of trouble. But from a very early age, it was clear that horses were his truest passion. We will never know if this started at age one with his first ride on the Tennessee walking mare ‘Marybelle’ or at two years of age with his first pony, 'Chief,’ but one thing is for certain, from that point on there was no looking back. Whether it was Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds or Shetlands, Bret not only wanted them, but he wanted good ones. His attention to their bloodlines, conformation, attitude and athleticism put Bret’s racehorses in the winner’s circle and his Thistle Ridge Shetlands in the Hall of Fame. Bret
would often say, ‘politics are involved in most everything, but we are going to stay out of all that…we are going to breed, raise, train and race or show our own, and that way when we succeed, we will know that we really did something special.’ Here is one more handshake
Dad…thanks for everything.

Left to cherish the lifetime of memories are his wife of 53 years, Janet, Dumont; daughter, Shannan Morgan, Des Moines; and son Brian, his wife Summer and their three children, Bennita, Barrett and Brooks, Algona; brothers Brad (Craig, CO) and Barry (Orland Park, IL) and sister Michelle (Fleming Island, FL). He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law.
